Frequently asked questions
Booking, insurance, pick-up and driving in Iceland. Can't find your answer? Call or email us and we'll help.
Booking and payment
No. Basic insurance, VAT and unlimited kilometres are included in every price you see. Extras, a higher Insurance Package and any out-of-hours pick-up fee are shown before you pay.
It depends on the payment option you choose at checkout. Pay Now – Refundable bookings get a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before pick-up. Pay Now – Non-refundable and Pay on Arrival – Non-refundable bookings can't be refunded, but they cost less.
Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Apple Pay.
You're always charged in Icelandic krónur (ISK). You can view prices in EUR or USD, but those are approximate, and your bank converts the final amount.
Insurance and damage
Basic insurance is included in every booking. The excess is the most you pay towards damage. Higher Insurance Packages lower it, and Zero-excess removes it completely.
Gravel and sand-and-ash damage are common in Iceland. Each Insurance Package lists exactly what it covers, so you can compare them before you pay.
Yes. At pick-up we place a temporary hold on your card to cover possible damage, and release it after you return the car. It's separate from the rental price and is never taken online.
Pick-up and return
At Keflavík Airport, where our desk is open daily from 06:00 to 23:00, or at our office in Selfoss, open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 18:00. Arriving at another time? Tell us when you book.
Yes, you can pick up at Keflavík Airport and return in Selfoss, or the other way round. Choose a different return location in the search, and any fee appears before you pay.
Yes, add an additional driver as an Extra when you book. Every driver must be 20 or over and show their licence at pick-up.
Driving in Iceland
Not always. In summer, the Ring Road and the main sights on the south coast are fine in a small or family car. You need a 4x4 for F-roads, and in winter it gives you more grip on snowy passes. Ask us and we'll tell you honestly.
Only in a 4x4. Icelandic law allows only four-wheel-drive cars on F-roads, which are usually open from late June to early September. Check road.is for current conditions before you set off.
Yes. Every car has winter tyres from November to April, at no extra cost.
You'll get the details when you pick up the car. Fuel stations and fast chargers are easy to find along the Ring Road, but they're far apart in the highlands and the east, so fill up when you can.
